Update on Lease Negotiations with Escambia County

Pensacola Ice Pilots News Release

The Front Office of the Pensacola Ice Pilots is releasing a statement as well as an open letter to the fans of Pensacola concerning the progress of a lease extension with Escambia County.

"Mario and I are very disturbed by yesterday's direction of the county commissioners," said Ice Pilots President Greg Schuh. "We feel it is important to update our fans and county residents at this time on the lease extension requests."

"We have always been committed to keeping hockey in Pensacola as well as try to negotiate in good faith with the county," adds Schuh. While numerous attempts to negotiate with the county went unanswered, Mario Forgione has had conversations with the interim County Administrator since yesterday.

The Pensacola Ice Pilots organization has released an open letter to all fans along with a copy of the Ice Pilots requests in their 2008-09 contract negotiations which was presented to the County Administrator in July. This information is available on the Ice Pilots web-site.

The Ice Pilots requests, or "additional concessions" as the county puts it, is a brief list of 10 items they wish to negotiate with the county. With the exception of the request to eliminate the facility fee and/or ticket processing fee, the remaining points of negotiation for an extended lease create no monetary shortfall or deficit to the county. "It is my opinion that the county is receiving incorrect and unsubstantiated information regarding the implications of our lease request," adds Schuh. "Furthermore, the other issues remaining on the lease extension request are reasonable items which most if not all other ECHL teams currently enjoy in their leases. The issues we have addressed are key points in a lease that benefit the consumer, the Ice Pilots and county through increased attendance and revenue."

The Ice Pilots Opening Night face-off against Gwinnett is Friday, October 19 at the Hangar. A special appearance by the Zooperstars will highlight the start of the Ice Pilots 12th year of hockey in Pensacola.
