Royals Power Outage Closes 5-2 Loss To Cincinnati

Cincinnati, OH - Although the Reading Royals (19 - 21 - 5 = 43; 5th North Division) scored on the team's first shot, the Royals fell behind quickly thereafter and ended up losing to the Cincinnati Cyclones, 5-2. The Royals were unable to mount a third period comeback, despite having 11:57 worth of power play time and out-shooting the Cyclones 16-0 in the final stanza. Goaltender Jeff Pietrasiak (11 - 14 - 1; 18/23) took the loss playing in his fourteenth straight game for the Royals and twenty-fourth game in the team's last twenty-five.

Reading started the scoring on the team's first shot of the night 1:14 into the game when Shawn Collymore walked off the left wing wall and ripped a snap shot high glove side on Cedrick Desjardins (17 - 11 - 0; 33/35) for his eleventh goal of the season. The Cyclones quickly bounced back-1:58 later-when defenseman Jarred Mohr picked up a loose puck in the center circle, carried into the offensive end on the left wing side, and unleashed a 30 foot slap shot that beat Pietrasiak short side for his second goal of the year. Cincinnati took a 2-1 lead 1:04 after that when Mohr fired one from the right point that Pietrasiak kicked out with his right skate. The rebound fell to Mathieu Aubin, who was planted in front of the net and put it in for his fifth goal of the year. The Cyclones closed the period with what proved to be the game winner when Eric Johnson blocked a shot high in the Cincinnati defensive zone and was then off to the races. Johnson carried in on the right side and fired another 30 foot slap shot that went off the right shoulder of Pietrasiak and fluttered to the ice and across the goal line to make it 3-1 with just 11.8 seconds remaining in the first period.

Reading started the second period just as they did the first-scoring on the team's first opportunity 59 seconds in. Collymore broke down the left wing side, carried deep into the offensive end and threw a saucer across the top of the crease to Greg Hogeboom, who was crashing out front. Hogeboom couldn't get his stick on the puck, so he used his skate blade to direct the puck on net. Desjardins stopped that, but Dany Roussin was trailing, and he sniped the rebound for his fifth goal of the year. The Cyclones regained the two goal lead at the 10:09 mark of the second while on the power play. Cory Urquhart fired a shot from the high slot and Aubin got a piece of the puck to redirect it behind Pietrasiak for his second of the night. Cincinnati took a 5-2 lead on their next power play when Urquhart stepped low into the slot and slid a snap shot through traffic that also slid between the legs of Pietrasiak for his twenty-second of the season with 2:44 remaining in the period.

In the third, the Royals had their chances to mount the comeback-primarily due to 11:57 of power play time (which included a five minute major assessed against Brian Mullally for elbowing). However, despite outshooting the Cyclones 16-0 in the final period, Reading was unable to solve Desjardins and the number one penalty killing team in the ECHL, sending the Royals to their third consecutive loss.
