Royals Drop Tuesday Night Contest to Hurricanes

Lethbridge, AB - Forward Carter Dereniwsky scored his third goal of the season for the Victoria Royals in a 5-1 loss to the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Tuesday night.

The Royals also celebrated a pair of milestones during the game, with forward Tanner Scott making his 100th career WHL appearance and prospect Deegan Kinniburgh playing in his first game.

Victoria native and former Royals defenceman Nolan Bentham led the way with two goals for the Hurricanes in the win, while Lethbridge goaltender Harrison Meneghin also came up big for the home side, stopping 30 of the 31 shots he faced.

On the other end, Royals goaltender Tyler Palmer stopped 31 of 36 shots in the contest.

Nolan Bentham (2) would open the scoring for Lethbridge (7-8-0-0) on Tuesday, giving the home side an early 1-0 advantage at 6:53 with a goal in his first game against his former team.

However, Victoria (3-11-2-0) would soon respond on a powerplay marker by forward Carter Dereniwsky (3) at the 10:18 mark, tying the game at 1-1 where it would stand as the game entered the second period.

Defeneman Kalem Parker and forward Jake Poole would collect assists on the play, giving both players points in back-to-back games.

The Hurricanes would go back up by one at the 4:12 mark of the middle frame on a goal by forward Jett Jones (7). Lethbridge would then use a subsequent five-on-three powerplay to further extend their lead, with Nolan Benthem (3) once again striking against his old team with a goal at the 13:32 mark to bring the score to 3-1.

'Canes defenceman Joe Arntson (4) would add one more for the home team before the end of the frame, scoring at the 17:16 mark to make it 4-1 entering the third period.

Lethbridge would add one more in the final frame as forward Logan Wormald (3) would count his team's second powerplay marker of the game at the 0:49 mark to bring the score to 5-1, where it would stand at the final buzzer.

Looking ahead, Lethbridge will take the next two days off as they prepare to host the Vancouver Giants at the Enmax Centre this Friday night.

Victoria, meanwhile, will play their second game in as many nights as they travel to the Tsuut'ina Seven Chiefs Sportsplex for a Wednesday night battle against the Calgary Hitmen.

Puck drop for that contest is set for 6 pm PDT.
