Victoria Royals News Release

Vancouver, BC - In a Friday night matchup at the PNE Pacific Coliseum the Victoria Royals took on the Vancouver Giants in the seventh meeting of the season between the B.C. Division rivals. The Royals gave Keith Hamilton the start in goal, while the Giants countered with Adam Morrison.

Both teams exchanged opportunities in the offensive zone for the first five minutes of the game, but it was the Giants who got the first quality scoring chance. Anthony Ast circled around the net and centered for Marek Tvrdon, who quickly snapped the puck towards the net, but Hamilton slid across to make the save and keep the game scoreless. Just prior to the 10 minute mark of the period, Royals' defenseman Brett Cote took a shot from the left point. The puck deflected off a body and floated over top of Morrison before it landed past the outside of the right post. Vancouver notched the game's first goal at 14:47 after Dalton Sward drove to the net and buried a rebound off of Levi Bews' original shot. The Giants stretched their lead to two on the power play at 17:02 after Neil Manning collected a rebound in the crease and slid it past Hamilton. Vancouver took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

The Giants pushed their lead to 3-0 at 1:50 on the power play. Cain Franson drove to the net and took the initial shot, but Sward collected the rebound to notch his second of the night. Vancouver increased their lead after Tvrdon converted in front of the net at 4:08. Jared Rathjen replaced Hamilton after the Giants' fourth marker. Vancouver added four more goals to lead 8-0 after 40 minutes.

The Giants added two more markers in the first five minutes of period before Victoria's Steven Hodges broke Morrison's shutout bid at 7:52. Jamie Crooks notched the Royals' second goal at 10:37. Victoria's Logan Nelson and the Giants' Sward exchanged goals in the last 10 minutes to round out the scoring. Giants 11 Royals 3.

Victoria went 0/5 0.0% on the power play, while Vancouver was 5/7 71.4%. The Giants outshot the Royals 46-17.

Victoria comes home Saturday morning in preparation for a date with the reigning WHL Champion Kootenay Ice tomorrow night, which starts at 7:05pm at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.
