Victoria Royals News Release
Kamloops, BC - On Friday night, the Victoria Royals visited the Kamloops Blazers at Interior Savings Centre. The Royals gave Coleman Vollrath the start in net, while the Blazers looked to Bolton Pouliot.
The B.C. Division rivalry began with limited chances being earned by each side. The Royals killed off a penalty midway through the first frame before being awarded a late powerplay opportunity of their own, but the two clubs skated to a scoreless tie after 20 minutes of play.
Ryan Rehill opened the scoring for the Blazers with a powerplay goal 3:45 into the second period. After the goal, Vollrath stood tall in net throughout the period as he turned aside several Kamloops opportunities and Victoria's Brandon Magee tied the game with 31 seconds remaining in the second frame. Just after a Kamloops penalty expired, Magee picked up a loose puck in the high slot and fired a quick snap shot up and over the left shoulder of Pouliot. The late strike sent the Royals and Blazers into the second intermission tied at one apiece.
Tyler Soy gave the Royals their first lead of the game just 1:29 into the third period. While shorthanded, Soy chipped the puck past a Kamloops defenceman and broke down the left wing on a two-on-one. Soy kept the puck and slid it through the legs of Pouliot to give Victoria an edge on his first career shorthanded goal. Taylor Crunk later added to the Royals' lead with 7:09 remaining in the period. Logan Fisher chipped the puck in deep before he retrieved it and threw a high pass in front of Pouliot. Crunk batted the puck out of midair for his sixth goal of the season and the two-goal advantage. Vollrath shut the door the rest of the way as Victoria went on to post a single season franchise record with their 36th win of the year. Victoria 3 Kamloops 1.
Victoria went 0/30.0% on the powerplay, while Kamloops went 1/425.0%. The Blazers outshot the Royals 37-29.
The Royals will head to Kelowna tomorrow night to take on the league-leading Rockets at Prospera Place. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m. The Royals' next home game will take place on Wednesday, February 12th at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre when they host the Tri-City Americans for a 7:05 p.m. puck drop.
