Kelowna Rockets News Release
The Edmonton Oil Kings defeated the Kelowna Rockets 3-2 in a shootout on Friday night at Prospera Place in Kelowna in an entertaining battle between the two top teams in the WHL.
The Rockets and Oil Kings battled through 60 minutes of regulation and five minutes of overtime before Mitch Moroz was the only player to score in the shootout, giving the Oil Kings the win, their 10th straight.
The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 after the second before neither team could score the rest of the way in what was a physical and intense battle.
Myles Bell with his team leading 36th goal of the season, and Carter Rigby with his 14th, had the Rockets goals.
Jordon Cooke suffered the overtime loss in the game. Shots were 27-27 and both Cooke and Edmonton starter Tristan Jarry were solid.
The overtime period produced good chances at both ends of the ice, including a breakaway by Ryan Olsen with under 10 seconds to play that resulted in a lengthy review to see if the puck had crossed the line. It was ruled no goal before the shootout ensued.
The shootout loss dropped the Rockets record to 43-7-0-4 on the season as they get set for two more games through the long weekend.
Kelowna will host Victoria on Saturday night at Prospera Place before an afternoon game on Monday against Seattle (2 p.m.).
