Royals' Bats Quiet Vs. Sounds
June 3, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA â John Wasdin, who pitched a perfect game for Nashville earlier this season, wasn't perfect Tuesday at Rosenblatt. But, the Sounds righthander seemed like a different pitcher than the one who was routed by the Omaha Royals recently in Nashville. Wasdin (6-2) gave up just three hits and one run over five-and-two-thirds innings to help the Sounds to a 5-1 win and a split of the four-game series before 4,204 fans.
Wasdin was rocked by the Royals for nine runs (eight unearned) on eleven hits over five-and-two-thirds innings on May 25th at Greer Stadium. But, on Tuesday, he did not allow a hit until Jarrod Patterson's triple with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.
By then, the Sounds had built a 4-0 lead. Matt Stairs hit a solo home run for the second straight game on his rehab assignment in the first inning. The homer came off Royals starter Mike Fyhrie (1-1), who also surrendered a three-run blast to Tony Alvarez in the third.
Both club's bullpens provided shutout relief. Omaha's Shawn Sedlacek, who was just officially added back to the roster Monday after clearing waivers since being designated for assignment by Kansas City, retired all nine Nashville batters he faced.
Four Sounds relievers combined to keep the Royals scoreless over the final three-and-a-third frames, with Mark Corey getting the final out to pick up his 16th save, tying him for the saves lead in the Pacific Coast League.
Omaha (28-32) joins the rest of PCL in enjoying an off day on Wednesday. The Royals host Edmonton in the lid-lifter of a four-game series Thursday at 7:05 p.m.: Trappers LH Scott Downs (5-3, 3.88) vs. Royals RH Wes Obermueller (7-4, 3.24).
