Edmonton Trappers News Release
Today's Pacific Coast League game between the Edmonton Trappers and the Memphis Redbirds, originally scheduled to begin at 7:05 PM, has been cancelled due to rain. The game will not be rescheduled as the two clubs do not meet again in 2003. Edmonton begins an eight-game road trip in Omaha on Thursday night. Wednesday is an off-day for the club. The Trappers are currently three games behind the first-place Portland Beavers in the North Division of the Pacific Coast League.
Edmonton had a successful homestand, going 4-3. The club split four games with the East Division leading New Orleans Zephyrs, then won the first two games of the Memphis series before losing last night's game 3-2. The Trappers batted .335 (81-for-242) with three home runs and 38 runs scored on the homestand and are now second in the league with a .296 team batting average. The club has posted a 16-11 record at TELUS Field this season and has had a winning record on all four homestands. Edmonton has also had a flair for the dramatic this season, winning five games in their final at-bat at TELUS Field.
Outfielder Terrmel Sledge is having an outstanding season for the Trappers thus far. He was named the Player of the Month for May after batting .371 (36-for-97) with three home runs and 20 RBI in 25 games. It is the second consecutive month in which Sledge has won the award. He is currently on a 17-game hitting streak, during which time he is batting .422 (27-for-64) with two home runs and 13 RBI. It is the longest current hitting streak in the PCL and is tied for the third longest streak in the league this season. Sledge is 10th in the league in batting with a .332 average, is third in on-base percentage (.436) and is tied for fifth in triples with four.
Utility man Edwards Guzman is also having a terrific season. Guzman is batting .349, the fifth highest average in the Pacific Coast League, and is third in the league in hits with 73. Guzman is currently on a 10-game hitting streak, during which he is batting .450 (18-for-40). He has enjoyed much of his success at TELUS Field, where he is batting .408 (42-for-103) with two home runs and 16 RBI in 27 games. Several other Trappers are on hot streak, including outfielder Valentino Pascucci, who is batting .372 (16-for-43) in his last 16 games and shortstop Anthony Medrano, who has reached base via a hit or a walk in 24 consecutive games.
The Trappers will hit the road on Thursday to begin an eight-game road trip that will take them to Omaha and Iowa. Omaha is currently in second place in the Central Division, 3 ½ games behind the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. Iowa has the second worst record in the league at 23-34 and are 7 ½ games behind Colorado Springs.
The next Trapper home game will be on Friday, June 13 when the club will take on the Sacramento River Cats. The game will begin at 7:05 PM. Tickets for all regular season home games are on sale and can be purchased through Ticketmaster at 451-8000. Twenty-game packs, ten-game packs and 2003 season tickets are also currently on sale at the Trapper General Office. For more information call 414-4450.
