Edmonton Trappers News Release
The top two prospects in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system, right-handers Dan Haren and Jimmy Journell (3-5), yielded only one run between them through 7.2 innings as the Memphis Redbirds held on to defeat the Edmonton Trappers 3-2 Monday night at TELUS Field. Haren, the Cardinals number one prospect, yielded only one run on five hits and two walks, while fanning two in 6.0 innings of work before turning the ball over to Journell in the seventh. He surrendered just three hits in 1.2 innings to extend his scoreless streak to 11.0 innings. The win ends a five-game losing streak for the Redbirds and stops the Trappers winning streak at three games. Edmonton needs to win the final game of the series on Tuesday night to post a winning record on their fourth consecutive homestand. They are 4-3 thus far on the homestand. The meeting between Memphis and Edmonton on Tuesday will be the last between the two clubs this season.
Bo Donaldson made his first start of the season for the Trappers and was outstanding, keeping the Redbirds hitless for 3.1 innings. Harden was almost as strong, shutting the Trappers out through the first three frames. Edmonton broke the scoreless tie with a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Terrmel Sledge led off the frame with a double to left-center and then moved to third on a single to right by Joe Vitiello. Haren got Edwards Guzman to ground into a double play, but Sledge scored, giving Edmonton the lead. Donaldson took a shutout into the sixth inning before the Redbirds finally tallied a run. With one out Jon Nunnally drew a walk off the right-hander. Nunnally stole second with two down in the frame and Donaldson walked Scott Seabol to put runners on first and second. Anthony Ferrari (1-1) then came on in relief and yielded a single to Todd Dunwoody that plated the tying run, Nunnally.
The Trappers had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Sledge walked with one out and Vitiello followed with a single. Guzman flew out to left field, but Haren then hit Valentino Pascucci to load the bases. He worked out of the jam by getting Matt Cepicky to ground out. Shortstop Jason Bowers led off the top of the eighth with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nunnally. Dee Haynes reached on an infield single and third baseman Scott Seabol followed with a two-run triple that gave Memphis the lead for good. The Trappers battled back in the bottom of the ninth inning. Catcher Randy Knorr led off the frame with a double down the left field line. Peter Bergeron struck out, but Luis Figueroa followed with a single up the middle to plate pinch-runner Tim Drew from second. Memphis reliever Scott Layfield then induced Anthony Medrano to ground into a game-ending double play. For Layfield it was his second save of the season.
