Rox Walk off vs Honkers

July 22, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
St. Cloud Rox News Release

ST CLOUD-The St Cloud Rox defeated the Rochester Honkers 3-2 Saturday night in front of 1,726 fans at Joe Faber Field. A walk-off-walk by Rox second baseman Tony Skjefte (Minnesota) with a full count sealed the win. St Cloud improves to 9-9 with the victory.

The Rox scored first in the bottom of the first inning when Chris Paul (California) scored on an Andy Henkemeyer (Minnesota) single. St. Cloud scored again in the bottom of the fifth when Paul singled home Ty Jackson (Washington St) to give the Rox a 2-0 lead.

The Honkers tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning, but the Rox would get the last laugh in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Nick Rau (Georgia Southern) led off the ninth with a walk and advanced to third when Phil Imholte (St Cloud State) laid down a bunt that resulted in a Honker throwing error. Chris Paul was intentionally walked to load the bases and set the stage for a great at bat to win the game by Skjefte.

After a nine pitch battle with Honkers hurler Reid Roper (Illinois), the Rox second baseman drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch up around the chin to force home Rau and give St Cloud the win.

Starting pitcher Billy Soule (Minnesota) was stellar for the Rox, pitching eight strong innings. The righty from Hamel, MN scattered seven hits over eight innings, striking out six while walking only two. Adam Maxon (Jacksonville) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the win.

Chris Paul was 3-4 in the game with a walk, run scored and RBI and Andy Henkemeyer was 2-4 with an RBI, his team-leading 36th.

The Rox are now 9-9 on the season and are just three games behind first place Duluth. On Sunday the Rox have a Youth Glove giveaway planned, presented by Central Minnesota Credit Union. The first 250 children 12/under will receive a glove and the opportunity to play catch on the field beginning at 11:30 am. Fans who wish to receive a glove are advised to get to Joe Faber Field early, as gates will open earlier than normal for the promotion. Tickets can be purchased at www.StCloudRox.com.
