Brockton Rox News Release

BROCKTON, MA - (July 24, 2009) - Propelled by four home runs in a 6-5 victory in Game One and six brilliant innings by starter RHP Freddy Flores in Game Two, the Brockton Rox swept a double header against the American Defenders of New Hampshire on Friday night at Campanelli Stadium.

In the first game, New Hampshire jumped out against Rox starter LHP Fraser Robinson with four, first-inning runs, highlighted by DH Jabe Bergeron's two-run double to start the scoring. Robinson came back in the second inning and retired the side in order. However on the last play of the inning, Robinson took a one-hop line drive off of his throwing forearm and was forced to exit the game.

The Rox offense came alive over the next four innings with four home runs including two from 1B Clyde Williams to take a 6-4 lead. RHP Buster Lussier delivered four innings of solid emergency relief, allowing only a solo home run to the league leader 3B Chris Kelly in the sixth inning, which cut the lead to 6-5.

RHP Jerry Dunn sealed the win recording the game's final three outs and earning his 12th save of the season.

In the nightcap, Brockton outlasted New Hampshire in a pitchers' duel between Rox starter RHP Freddy Flores and New Hampshire's RHP Luis Valdez. Brockton tallied the game's first run on a pair of leadoff singles in the first inning and a sacrifice fly by Williams. However Valdez did not allow another hit until a two-out single by CF Chris Valencia in the fifth inning.

Meanwhile, Defenders' 3B Chris Kelly hit his second home run of the day off of Flores in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. It was the only damage or true threat against Flores all night. The 35-year-old rookie scattered three hits over six innings, walking one and striking out one and eventually earned his third win in five starts.

The Rox broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning on 2B Melvin Falu's sacrifice fly, and then broke open the game on a two-run double by 3B Phillip Cuadrado. Dunn came out for the final three outs and earned his second save of the day, striking out the side in the final inning of play.

The Rox and Defenders take the field for the third game in the four-game series at 6:05 PM on Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium. LHP Miguel Flores (3-1, 4.14 ERA) will take the ball for New Hampshire against Brockton's LHP Craig Anderson (5-3, 3.94 ERA).
