Sussex Skyhawks News Release
AUGUSTA, N.J. - Designated hitter Luis Soto lofted a sacrifice fly scoring Ray Serrano from third in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Sussex Skyhawks to a dramatic 8-7 win over the Worcester Tornadoes on Friday night in front of 3,743 at Skylands Park.
With the score 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth, Serrano led off by getting hit by a pitch. John Urick then executed a perfect hit-and-run by putting the ball through the vacated hole at shortstop advancing Serrano to third. Jeremy Hunt followed by getting hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.
Soto came to the plate and was able to put a fly ball to relatively shallow center. Worcester centerfielder Lucas Taylor caught the ball on the run and fired a strike to catcher Alex Trezza, who applied the tag to a diving Serrano. The tag was a split second late, and the Skyhawks were able to walk away with the second win of the four game series.
Ed Campusano picked up the win for Sussex after throwing two scoreless innings of relief. Eddie Pena took the loss for Worcester.
Maikel Jova finished 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Serrano went 2-for-4 with three RBI for Sussex. Carlos Sosa went 2-for-5 with three RBI for Worcester.
The Skyhawks and Tornadoes return to action at Skylands Park on Saturday for the third game of the four game series. Game time is set for 5:05 p.m.
