Worcester Tornadoes News Release
AUGUSTA, NJ--- Former Tornado Luis Soto, now an outfielder/designated hitter for the Sussex SkyHawks, hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Sussex to their second win in as many nights against Worcester, 8-7.
Rookie Ryan Quinn made his first professional start on this night and got off to a rocky beginning. The first to batters reached in the first on an error and a walk, both driven in by Maikel Jova's double. The Tornadoes responded with one a run in the second and two in the third, RBI's on a Jeff LaHair single and a Carlos Sosa double. Worcester extended it's lead even further in the fifth with three runs; enough to knock out Sussex starter Carter Clements who only lasted four and a third.
Jorge Moreno (4) and Ray Serrano (5) both went yard off Quinn in the fifth and Sussex crept back to within one, 6-5. They would take back the lead in the sixth on a pair of singles from Jova and Serrano making the tally 7-6.
The third Sussex pitcher of the night right hander Greg Lane began the seventh by getting Mike MacMillan to ground to short, however a throwing error charged to his counterpart Mark Pappas allowed him to reach. Chris Colabello singled one batter later, and MacMillan scored the tying run.
Ed Campusano (1-0), on for the second straight night, threw a scoreless eighth and ninth for the birds. Eddie Pena (0-1) came on for his third full inning of work in the ninth, after being nearly perfect for two and a third previous. Pena sandwiched two hit batsmen with a single and the bases were loaded with two outs for former Tornado Luis Soto. Soto struck a shallow fly ball to the centerfielder Lucas Taylor who caught the baseball then fired home in an attempt to cut down Serrano at the plate. The throw beat the runner, but home plate umpire Chris Pinson ruled that he slid under Alex Trezza's tag and that was the ballgame.
Left hander Ryan Lobban (6-3) will try to become the league's first seven game winner and stop Worcester's two game skid against Sussex and Mike Schellinger (4-3) at 5:05pm.
