Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA (June 23, 2008) - The Rox handed Quebec Capitales' starter RHP Luis Valdez his first loss of the season by defeating the Capitales 6-3 on Monday night at Campanelli Stadium. Led by LHP Chris McDonough who recorded his team-high fourth win of the season, Brockton dug out of a 2-0 deficit for the victory.

Quebec took an early lead when 1B Eddie Lantigua hit a two-run home run in the first inning off of McDonough, but Brockton came out with six hits in the first three innings against Valdez. The hit parade, which totaled 14 by the end of the night, yielded just one run until the bottom of the fifth inning. McDonough had settled in on the mound and Rox SS Dominic Ramos tied the game when he scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.

In a 2-2 tie, OF Tony Gonzalez started the bottom of the seventh inning with a pinch-hit home run to give Brockton a 3-2 advantage. Capitales' starter Valdez had not allowed a home run all season, but four batters later, OF Jud Thigpen hit a two-run shot to the visiting bullpen in left field to give the Rox a 5-2 advantage. The teams traded runs in the eighth inning, and closer RHP Jerry Dunn recorded his seventh save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

McDonough pitched seven innings and scattered six hits in his fifth professional start. He allowed only the two, first-inning runs in the game as the Rox took the first game of the four-game series from the Capitales and moved back to the .500 mark on the year. Brockton (15-15) hosts Quebec (18-11) in the second game of the series on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Wayne Lundgren (2-2, 6.00 ERA) will start for the Rox against LHP Kevin Beavers of the Capitales.
