Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, Mass. - The Brockton bats were at it again Tuesday afternoon as the Brockton Rox (24-19) plated eight runs on twelve hits on the way to sweeping the Pittsfield Colonials (23-20) and assumed sole possession of third place in the Can-Am League with an 8-6 victory.
David Qualben (3-3) went the distance for Pittsfield, but was knocked around early and often in the loss, as the Rox scored six runs in the first two frames.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Keith Brachold launched a two-run homer to give the Rox a lead they would maintain for the remainder of the ballgame.
More fireworks ensued in the second when Brockton collected four straight two-out hits, netting four more runs. Shawn Williams started the rally with a single and a stolen base and Dominic Ramos finished it with a two-run blast, his second of the season.
Staked to a 6-1 lead, Robert Bono (3-0) served up a three-run home run to Peter Fatse in the fourth inning, that cut the lead down to two, but that is as close as Pittsfield would come to closing the gap.
The Rox added two more runs in the fifth on a Chris Grossman sacrifice fly and an RBI double from Ryan Rosyter, making the score 8-4.
Bono (5.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) lasted into the sixth frame in the winning effort, his first since winning back-to-back starts to open the season.
Qualben showed his endurance and kept the Colonials in the game by tossing three scoreless innings to conclude his outing, while sitting down seven straight from the fifth through the seventh.
Pittsfield scratched a run on two walks and an error in the sixth and another on Johnny Welch's RBI single in the seventh, but remained behind by two heading to the ninth.
Jake Hale entered from the bullpen in the final frame to relieve Mark Rosen (3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER) and collected his second save. Hale put himself in a difficult situation after walking Rafael Cabreja to lead off the inning and giving up a double in the next at bat to Jerod Edmondson. With the tying runs in scoring position and no outs, Hale rallied to retire the next three straight, ending the Pittsfield threat and nailing down the seventh straight win for Brockton.
Edmondson and Welch each finished the day with three hits, while Chris Valencia also had three base knocks, while scoring twice and driving in one.
The Rox ride a season high seven game winning streak into the off day Wednesday after clubbing the Colonials pitching staff for 33 runs on 46 hits in the three game series. Brockton returns to action Thursday evening at Yogi Berra Stadium, where the Rox finish out the first half with a three game set against the New Jersey Jackals. Toeing the rubber for Rox in game one is Mike Smith (4-4, 3.61), with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
