Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA (August 11, 2007) -- RHP John Kelly came within an out of the third complete-game in four Rox starts but still pitched 8.2 innings of two-run baseball to lead the Rox to a 6-2 win over the Quebec Capitales before 3,062 at Campanelli Stadium on Saturday evening. The Rox have won four straight games and the starters have pitched all but one inning during the recent hot stretch. LF Jeremy Coronado led off the game with a homer for the Rox, and 3B Melvin Falu had three doubles and drove in three runs in the win. Coronado, CF Matt Maloney, 1B Francisco Lebron each had a pair of hits in the victory. The Rox have now won two straight series and the four-game winning streak matches their season-best.

Kelly retired the side in the first inning and the Rox took just three pitches in the first inning to take the lead. Coronado homered down the right field line off Quebec RHP Keith Dunn to put the Rox up 1-0, but they continued their offensive prowess later in the inning. After a one-out single by Lebron and a two out hit by RF Tony Gonzalez, Falu swung at the first pitch he saw and ripped a two-run double to the right-center field gap to put the Rox in front 3-0.

Brockton added a run in the second on an RBI groundout by C Lee Rubin, and fifth run in the third inning on Falu's second RBI double. Kelly retired the first 12 batters of the game before giving up a single to Quebec 1B Eddie Lantigua leading off the fifth, who later scored in the inning on an RBI single off the bat of DH Ivan Rojas. The Capitales scored two in the fifth to trail 5-2 but got no closer. Kelly allowed just two his in the next three innings.

In the eighth, the Rox plated an insurance run when Falu doubled for the third time in the game and scored on Rubin's second RBI, a sac fly to right. While Kelly retired the first two batters in the ninth, an error allowed Lantigua to reach and Kelly departed in favor of RHP Matt Reilly, who got the final out of the game to secure a 6-2 Rox win.

The Rox look for just their second series sweep of the season as they send RHP Chris Martin (0-0, 6.75 ERA) to the hill in his first start against 2006 Can-Am League All-Star RHP Gabe Ribas (No Record 2007) in his first start of the 2007 season on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
