New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The New Haven County Cutters led start to finish in the early start, and forged back late in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader from the New Jersey Jackals.
Rolando Valles was too much to handle in game one for the Jackals, as the Cutters got three early runs and cruised to a 3-0 win.
The Cutter wasted no time touching up Mike Vicaro for a pair of runs in the top of the first. A two-out RBI double by Junior Zamora followed by a Chas Terni RBI gave New Haven the early lead. Only an inning later, they pushed to a three-run lead. Matt Hackney reached on a two base error by shortstop Guillermo Reyes to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a flyout, and came in to score on a groundout by Ervin Alcantara.
The three runs in the first two frames will would all the Cutters would need as Valles blanked the Jackals in a complete game effort. In seven innings, he gave up just three hits and struck out seven.
Mike Vicaro took the loss while yielding three runs, only two of them earned. He gave up four hits, walked three, and struck out four.
In game two, the Cutters scored seven answered runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings combined to win 8-7.
The first inning of game two began much like the first inning of game one. New Haven got on the scoreboard first with a bases loaded, infield, RBI single by Chas Terni to take a slim lead.
But unlike game one, the Jackals scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take their first lead of the day. A two-out, two RBI triple off the bat of Clyde Williams surged the Jackals in front.
In the bottom of the second, the Jackals plated two more runs, again with two outs. RBI singles by Jud Thigpen and Sandy Madera made the New Jersey lead 4-1.
The lead jumped to 7-1 when Jud Thigpen blasted a three-run homerun to left in the bottom of the fourth, but their lead would disappear over the span of the next three innings.
New Haven struck for three runs in the top of the fifth. Jeremy Pickrel's two-RBI double, and Junior Zamora's RBI single gave the Cutters some life. They added two more in the top of the sixth, cutting the deficit to just one, on Misha Dworken's two run homerun off of New Jersey reliever Justin Garza.
And in the seventh, the Cutters would complete the comeback. With the bases loaded, two outs, and a full count, Kevin Whiteside unleashed a solid single up the middle to score two and give the Cutters an 8-7 lead, and the eventual win.
Fitzgerald took the loss. Adam Piechowski took the win in relief, while Andy Weimer pitched a perfect ninth for the save.
