Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Worcester, MA -- Shortstop Charles Jeroloman hit a grand slam and knocked in five and DH Sean Gamble went 5-for-5 to lead a 17-hit attack, as the Grays beat up on the Worcester Tornadoes, 13-3, at Hanover Insurance Park on Saturday night.
The night didn't start out well for the Tornadoes as the Grays scored two in the 1st and two more in the 2nd off righty Alex Pena (4-5). Worcester opponents have now outscored the Tornadoes 46-4 in the 1st & 2nd innings of the last 15 games. DH Sean Gamble added a solo home run to centerfield in the 3rd to put the Grays up 5-0. But Worcester battled back off righty Fontella Jones (4-2), using a bases-loaded walk to Mike DeCarlo and a Josh Beauregard RBI fielder's choice in the 4th to close within three at 5-2. The Tornadoes tacked on another run in the 5th on an Omar Pena RBI double to make it 5-3.
But the Grays would blow things open against the Tornadoes bullpen, as Eddie Pena allowed two hits and a walk with two outs in the 7th to set the stage for Jeroloman. First pitch swinging, he launched a grand slam to left-center, the first grand slam allowed by Tornadoes pitching since the 2005 season. That made it 9-3, and the Grays put things away in the 8th against lefty Mike Meagher, batting around and sending 10 men to the plate, scoring 4 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits, 2 walks and 2 costly errors.
Jones (4-2) picked up the win with 6 slid innings and Alex Pena (4-5) allowed 11 hits and 5 runs (4 earned) in 5 innings to take the loss. Jeroloman has 7 RBIs in the series. Gamble's 5-5 performance included a home run and 3 RBIs. The Tornadoes have now scored fewer than 4 runs in 7 of the last 8 games. Worcester is 3-23 on the season when scoring fewer than 4 runs. The loss also drops the Tornadoes 5 games below .500 (34-39) for the first time this season. Worcester will try to salvage one game of their three-game series with the Grays on Sunday evening. Righty Junior Guerrero will try to be the stopper for the Tornadoes and he will be opposed by Grays righty Beau Dannemiller, who was born in Worcester. First pitch is set for 5:05pm.
