BROCKTON – The Rox started the second half of the season with a 7-0 victory over the New Jersey Jackals in front of 5,547 fans at Campanelli Stadium.

The Rox scored out of the gate as Nestor Smith (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 3 runs scored) lead off the first inning with a single, and Mike Torres (2-for-4) brought him around to score with his fourth triple of the season, extending his hitting streak to eight games and putting the Rox up, 1-0.

In the bottom of the third inning Saul Bustos (1-for-2) took Jackals starter Jackson Crowther deep to right field with his fifth home run of the season, giving the Rox a 2-0 edge.

The Rox started to pull away in the bottom of the fifth inning as Mike Sandoval got on base with a lead off walk. Smith then followed with a triple, scoring Sandoval. Bustos hit a sacrifice fly to bring Smith home from third base and extend the Rox lead, 4-0.

The Rox added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh as Mike Sandoval doubled, and Nestor Smith hit his fourth home run of the season to put the Rox up, 6-0. Bustos got on base with a walk. After Torres doubled him to third base, Bustos was able to score on a ground out by Brian Jones to make it 7-0.

Smith, who was in the on-deck circle for the Rox's final out, was just a double shy of hitting for the cycle, a feat that has yet to be accomplished by the Rox.

Brian Buchanan (7-1) picked up the win, pitching eight shutout innings, striking out seven, and scattering six hits. Tony Stutz closed out the game with an inning of relief, giving up one hit. Crowther (4-6) took the loss for the Jackals.

The crowd was the third largest in Rox history, with the two larger crowds coming earlier this season. On June 11, 5,799 fans watched the Rox defeat the New Haven County Cutters, 2-1. Two weeks later, on June 25, 5,625 watched as the Rox fell to the Jackals, 8-6.

The Rox (1-0, 28-19) and Jackals (0-1, 25-22) continue their three-game series Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium as the Rox pay tribute to the 2004 Super Bowl champion New England Patriots with "Eskimo Up Night." First pitch is 7:11 p.m.
