Elmira Pioneers News Release
Elmira, NY- The Elmira Pioneers got the second half of the season started off the long way, playing a ten inning game against the Capitales de Quebec. After playing nine innings without deciding a winner Quebec picked up three runs in the tenth to get the 4-1 win.
The big story of this game was the pitching duel between Chris Zallie of Elmira and Lance Franks of Quebec. Zallie went 8 2/3 innings allowing just one run, an RBI single by Wally Quigg in the fifth to put Quebec up 1-0 on four hits. Zallie's counterpart Franks allowed only a single run to Elmira in eight innings of work, a solo-homerun by Digz Edwards to tie the game up at one. In the end however, neither pitcher would factor in on the final decision.
In the tenth inning Quebec managed to put three runs on the board against Robbie Morrison, two of which were earned on an RBI double from Sam Bozanich to make it 3-1 an error on Ryan Smith on a play at the plate and an RBI single by Benoit Emond. In the bottom of the tenth the Pioneers attempted to rally, loading the bases with two out. The Pio's kept the game alive with runners on first and second on an infield single by Edwards. Cleatus Davidson then knocked out an infield single of his own to score pinch-runner Mike Grasso and make it a 4-2 game. But Jason Bryan struckout with the bases loaded to end the game with the tying run on second and the winning run on first.
Morrison took the loss for Elmira, while reliever Ben Grezlovski got the win for Quebec.
