
Buchanan baffles Jackals in second half opener

Little Falls, NJ â The New Jersey Jackals fell to the Brockton Rox, 7-0, thanks to an eight inning shutout dealt by Brockton's Brian Buchanan.
Brockton took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With Nestor Smith aboard, Mike Torres tripled, pushing him across for his 25th RBI of the season.
Saul Bustos hit his fifth homerun of the year in the bottom of the second, his third off the New Jersey Jackals, making it a 2-0 Brockton lead.
With one runner aboard in the fifth inning, Smith tripled, scoring one more for the Rox. Saul Bustos then drove him in on a sacrifice fly. After five complete innings, Brockton led New Jersey by a score of 4-0.
In the seventh, Smith would hit his third homer of the year, a two run shot, extending the Rox lead. Later in the inning, Brian Jones grounded out, scoring Bustos, giving the Rox a 7-0 advantage.
Jackson Crowther, of the Jackals, got the loss in six and a third innings of work. He gave up seven runs, all earned, on seven hits, with three walks and three strikeouts.
Starter Brian Buchanan pitched the way he started the 2004 season. He went eight shutout innings, scattering six hits, while striking out seven.
For the Jackals, Kevin Grijak was 2-4 with two singles.
Nestor Smith, of the Rox, was a double short of the cycle. Smith was 3-4 with a single, triple and a homerun. He drove in three, and also scored three times.
The Jackals and the Brockton Rox continue their series on Saturday, July 17, 2004. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:11 p.m. at Campanelli Stadium.
