Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA (July 30, 2007) -- RHP Mike McTamney allowed just an unearned run over seven innings on the hill while 1B Francisco Lebron provided all the run support McTamney needed with a two-run first- inning homer as the Rox defeated the Grays 3-1 at Campanelli Stadium before a Monday night audience of 1,651. McTamney won for just the second time in 2007 despite an ERA of just 3.11. RHP Amad Stephens pitched a scoreless ninth for the Rox, ending a Rox two-game losing skid and handing the Grays their fourth straight loss.
2B Alex Nunez led off the game against Grays RHP Elliott Shaw with a double to right-center, and scored pitches later on Lebron's 12th HR of the season. Lebron leads the Rox in homers and is two shy of tying the Rox single-season HR record. In the second, Nunez drove home SS Fredy De La Cruz with a fielders' choice groundout and the Rox had a 3-0 lead. While McTamney faced runners on base in each of the innings he pitched tonight, he continued to work out of trouble. He stranded two on in the fifth inning and gave up just an unearned run in the sixth inning, departing after seven. He scattered eight hits, walked just one, and struck out six.
The Rox had opportunities to score in virtually every inning, but stranded ten runners on base and failed to give the pitching staff any cushion in the late innings. RHP Kyle George loaded the bases in the eighth in relief of McTamney but left the bags jammed. In the ninth, the Grays CF Marcus Lewis reached base for the fourth time in the game (three hits) with a walk, but Stephens retired the next three hitters for his fourth save. De La Cruz was the only hitter for the Rox with more than one hit; Lebron's HR ran his hitting streak to eight and his consecutive games on-base streak to 24.
Tuesday at Campanelli LHP Rolando Viera (7-4, 2.69 ERA) looks for his fifth straight win as he faces RHP Fontella Jones (2-1, 3.00 ERA) at 7:05 PM.
