Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Worcester, MA -- Matt Weagle turned in a brilliant start and the Tornadoes fought back to tie it late, but Olmo Rosario hit a two-run home run off Eddie Pena in the 10th to send the Nashua Pride to a 4-2 extra-innings victory over Worcester on Monday night.

After a series of slugfests in Atlantic City, the series opener against Nashua was a terrific pitcher's duel between Weagle and Nashua righty Akira Okamoto. The two matched zeroes through the first 6 innings, as the game headed into the 7th in a scoreless tie. But with one out in the top of the 7th, Chris Colabello, in his return to Worcester as a member of the opposition, launched a long home run to leftcenter off Weagle to snap the tie and put the Pride up 1-0. One out later, Brian Duplissie blasted a Weagle pitch in almost the same location as the Collabello shot, giving the Pride a 2-0 lead.

But Omar Pena, who had struggled at the plate since rejoining the Tornadoes, led off the bottom of the 7th inning with a solo homer to left off Okamoto and Dominic Ramos delivered Keith Beauregard from second base with a single to left in the 8th off former Tornadoes righty Steve Palazzolo to knot things at 2-2. The Tornadoes had the winning run at third with two outs against Nashua closer Rich Garces in the bottom of the 9th, but couldn't score and the game headed for extra innings.

Eddie Pena (5-3) took over to start the top of the 10th and recorded a groundout to third to start the inning. However, Pena then walked Austin Wasserman on four pitches to bring the league's leading hitter, Olmo Rosario, to the plate. Rosario delivered, sending a Pena pitch deep into the night for a two-run home run and a 4-2 Nashua lead that would be the final.

Garces (5-1) picked up the win and Eddie Pena (5-3) took the loss. Angelo Burrows struck out two in a scoreless 9th for his 2nd save of the season. The Tornadoes have lost each of their last three extra inning games to fall to 2-3 on the season. Weagle's outstanding seven-inning outing was the first time a Tornadoes starting pitcher went as many as 7 innings since the first day of the second half, on July 16th, when Alex Pena went 7 against North Shore, a span of 13 games. The Tornadoes will try to get back on track on Tuesday night when they send righty Alex Pena to the mound against Nashua righty Jason Kosow in Game Two of the four-game series. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
