Rox Infield Bolstered With Signing Of Shawn Williams

Brockton, Mass. - The Brockton Rox of the Can-Am League announced on Monday that the club signed infielder Shawn Williams, who joined the club in time for this evening's game at New Jersey.

The 26-year-old joins the Rox after starting the season with the Newark Bears of the Atlantic League. There, he hit .253 in 29 games with five doubles and three RBI.

Previously, the native of Salt Lake City, Utah, spent three seasons in the Tampa Bay Rays' organization. In 2009, with high-A Charlotte of the Florida State League, Williams appeared in 97 games, smacking 19 doubles and adding 30 RBI. He played the 2008 campaign with Columbus of the low-A South Atlantic League, where he hit .278, and appeared in 17 games for short season-A Hudson Valley in 2007.

In 2006, his first professional season, Williams played for Fort Worth of the independent American Association, where he put together a .317 average with a home run and 23 RBI. He spent his college career at the College of Charleston and at St. Petersburg (Fla.) College. Williams was drafted by Houston in the 35th round of the 2002 draft out of high school, but did not sign.

Shawn is the son of Jimy Williams, who previously managed the Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays.
