Brockton Rox News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - Rox RF Keith Brachold drove in three runs on the night, but Brockton lost a ten-inning affair, 6-5, to the New Jersey Jackals on Monday evening at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Rox are now 2-2 in extra-inning games this season.
Brockton tallied the initial runs of the contest in the first inning as newly-signed 3B Shawn Williams walked, 1B Melvin Falu singled and then Brachold brought them both around with a two-run double.
The Jackals (4-3 second half, 23-30 overall) tied the game in the second inning with two unearned runs on one hit and one error. SS Dan Betteridge plated the second run of the frame on a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Rox (4-4, 31-22) regained a two-run advantage in the third inning on a two-out double by DH Clyde Williams which scored Falu, who reached on a fielder's choice, and C Chris Grossman, who had singled.
New Jersey jumped ahead in the fifth inning when the first three runners reached base. 3B Abraham Nunez and 1B Jabe Bergeron both singled, and then LF Jacob Butler skied his tenth homer of the season to left field to give the Jackals a 5-4 lead.
In the seventh inning, Shawn Williams led off with a double, moved to third on Falu's groundout and was plated on Brachold's RBI groundout. Brachold now has 40 RBI on the season.
Each team had a chance in the ninth inning to push ahead a run, but each was shut down. In the top of the ninth, the Rox had runners on first and third with one out, but Grossman grounded into a double play. Brockton hit into four double plays in the game.s
New Jersey's Nunez reached base to begin the bottom of the ninth, but RHP Josh Papelbon forced a double play and a groundout to send the game to extra innings.
After Brockton went in order in the tenth, the Jackals scored the winning run in the home half. With one out, RF Kevin Clark hit a broken-bat single and then C Dean Forthun was hit by a pitch from RHP Hunter Davis.
A fielder's choice retired Forthun at second, but with runners on the corners and two outs, CF Adam Godwin brought home the game-winning run on an infield chopper that no one could make a play on.
Both starters in the game received no-decisions. Brockton's LHP Mike Wlodarczyk gave up five runs (three earned) on nine hits in six innings with a season-high five walks and five strikeouts. LHP Paul Fagan, in his debut with New Jersey, also went six innings, allowing four runs, ten hits with two walks and four punchouts.
Davis (1-2) was dealt the loss, surrendering the winning run in the tenth on two hits with one strikeout and one hit batter. RHP Mike Pontius (2-3) won for the Jackals with 1.2 perfect innings out of the bullpen.
Papelbon was strong for the Rox, going three scoreless innings, giving up just one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.
Game two of the series will be on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium. RHP Freddy Flores (5-2) will make the start against New Jersey LHP Ryan Lobban (3-1). The series will wrap-up Wednesday morning with an 11:05 a.m. contest.
