New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - Center fielder Adam Godwin's two-out infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning helped the New Jersey Jackals win their fourth straight contest, 6-5, over the Brockton Rox on Monday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Right fielder Kevin Clark began the 10th-inning rally with a one-out, broken bat single up the middle against Brockton closer Hunter Davis before catcher Dean Forthun was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Brockton then failed to turn a double play on a bouncer back to the mound on the ensuing at-bat by shortstop Dan Betteridge, placing runners on the corners and setting up Godwin to drive in the winning run on a high chopper to the right side of the mound that was fielded by Davis with nobody covering first as Brockton first baseman Melvin Falu and second baseman Derek Kinzler both charged towards the batted ball along with Davis.
In a spectacular defensive effort, New Jersey turned three inning-ending double plays over the game's final five frames to thwart several Brockton rallies. Right-hander Mike Pontius (2-3), who earned the win in relief, entered with one out and runners on the corners in the top of the ninth and induced a twin-killing off the bat of catcher Chris Grossman. Pontius faced four batters and recorded five outs without the ball leaving the infield.
Offensively, Nunez collected his team-leading 18th multi-hit contest of the season with a 3-for-3 performance that included a double and two walks while Godwin went 3-for-6, marking his third three-hit outing in 10 games in a Jackals uniform.
In his Jackals debut, starter Paul Fagan allowed four runs on 10 hits in six innings with two walks and four strikeouts. He left with a 5-4 lead, but did not factor in the decision.
Brockton opened the scoring when Keith Brachold doubled down the right field line in the top of the first inning to give the Rox a 2-0 lead. New Jersey plated two unearned runs in the second to even the contest against Rox starter Mike Wlodarczyk, but a two-run double off the left field wall by Clyde Williams helped Brockton regain the lead at 4-2 in the third inning.
Wlodarczyk yielded five runs, three earned, on nine hits over six frames. Wlodarczyk equaled his season-high with five walks, including four in the bottom of the third inning where he escaped the jam unscathed.
That score held until the bottom of the fifth, when Nunez and first baseman Jabe Bergeron led off with back-to-back singles before left fielder Jacob Butler lifted a three-run home run to left, his team-leading 10th blast of the season, to give the Jackals their first lead of the contest at 5-4. Brockton plated the tying run in the seventh on a Brachold RBI groundout two batters after a leadoff double by newly-signed third baseman Shawn Williams.
The Jackals (4-3 second half, 23-30 overall) and Rox (4-4, 31-24) continue their three-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends left-hander Ryan Lobban (3-1, 4.87) to the mound against Brockton righty Freddy Flores (5-2, 3.79). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
