Rox Hand Over Game One To Quebec

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC - (September 9, 2009) - The Brockton Rox led the Quebec Capitales 7-2 with five outs to get to secure a Game One victory on Wednesday night. Brockton only recorded two of those outs and Quebec came back with a thrilling 8-7 walk-off win.

Brockton scored early and often against Capitales starter RHP Eric Gagne. RF Keith Brachold hit a two-run home run in the first inning and DH Palmer Karr followed with a two-run single in the third to push the Rox to a 4-0 lead.

Meanwhile, RHP Wayne Lundgren had the Quebec offense off-balance and after allowing a run in the third and fourth innings, he proceeded to retire 11 of the next twelve batters, the final four in that stretch all by strikeouts.

The Rox offense pushed its lead to 7-2 when 2B Melvin Falu led off the seventh inning with a solo home run off of Gagne.

Well over 100 pitches, Lundgren came out for the eighth inning and walked the leadoff man, CF Goefrey Tomlinson. After a flyout by LF Alex Nunez, , SS Ivan Naccarata reached when Brockton's LF Jud Thigpen dropped a line drive in left field for an error. Lundgren was relieved by RHP Keith Noe. Noe allowed an RBI single to C Pierre-Luc LaForest and then a two-run double by 3B Patrick Deschenes to cut the lead to 7-5 before retiring the last two batters of the inning.

Brockton went quietly in the top of the ninth inning, and called upon closer RHP Jerry Dunn for the save in the bottom of the ninth. Dunn walked the first two batters he faced, and then on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Tomlinson, Dunn's attempt to the get the lead runner at third base sailed into the left-field bullpen and allowed two runs to score and tie the game. Tomlinson took second base, and the next batter, Nunez singled to left field plating Tomlinson with the game-winner and sending the remainder of a sold out crowd into a frenzy.

RHP Brett Palanski recorded the win for Quebec with two innings of scoreless relief behind Gagne.

The Rox and Capitales will take the field for Game Two on Thursday night in Quebec at 7:05 PM. LHP Craig Anderson (7-4, 3.62 ERA) will start for the Rox against Quebec's RHP Michel Simard (9-4, 4.16 ERA). Quebec leads the best-of-five series 1-0.
