New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals have proudly announced that manager Joe Calfapietra has been selected as the 2009 Can-Am League Manager of the Year.

In his seventh season at the helm of the Jackals, Calfapietra guided the club to its most wins (55) since 2002. New Jersey also claimed its second first-half title as a member of the Can-Am, marking its fourth playoff berth under Calfapietra. The Jackals finished the season second in the league in team batting average (.283) and earned run average (4.19), and led the Can-Am with five players named to the Postseason All-Star Team.

This is the third Manager of the Year award for Calfapietra, the winningest manager in Jackals history. He took home his first in 2002 with the expansion Gary Southshore Railcats of the Northern League after posting an admirable 35-55 record despite playing the entire schedule on the road while waiting for construction of a new stadium to be completed. In 2004, Calfapietra received the award after leading New Jersey to the Northeast League title in just his second season with the Jackals.

Earlier this season, on June 17, a 2-0 win over Worcester gave the 38-year-old Calfapietra his 300th victory in a Jackals uniform.

After breaking into the coaching ranks in 1994 with the Duluth-Superior Dukes of the Northern League, Calfapietra moved on to Aberdeen of the Prairie League for 1995 and 1996. In 1997, he joined the Allentown Ambassadors to take charge of player development under manager Ed Ott. After three seasons in Allentown, Calfapietra was named manager of the Ambassadors in 2000, becoming the youngest manager in Northern League history. The Royersford, PA native guided the Ambassadors for two seasons before leaving to manage the expansion Gary Southshore Railcats in 2002, where he earned his first Manager of the Year award, before arriving in New Jersey for his first season with the Jackals in 2003.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. Playoff and regular season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434 or visiting www.Jackals.com.
