St. Cloud Rox News Release
Duluth, MN - After Friday's thrilling victory over Duluth (1-5) at the Rock Pile, St. Cloud (2-2) traveled to Wade Stadium and finished off a two-game sweep of the Huskies, 6-2.
Eight of the nine hitters in the Rox' order had at least one hit on Saturday afternoon and every member of St. Cloud's lineup reached base during the game. The Rox' six runs and 11 hits against the Huskies were both season-highs.
The scoring started almost immediately for the Rox in the first inning as three of the first four batters had singles, with Nate Swarts (Washington State) bringing in Dylan Nedved (Iowa) to start the scoring. With two outs in the first, the Rox had three straight batters walk and the final two came with the bases loaded, giving St. Cloud an early 3-0 lead.
Duluth cut into the lead in the third with two runs, but the Rox answered immediately in the top of the fourth with clutch two-out hitting. Jordan Barth (Augustana) drove in Payton Pennington (Kent State) with a base hit to left field. Then, Swarts followed up with a double that brought Barth in all the way from first.
The pitching staff continued to find early success this summer, allowing just two runs, both of which came in the third inning. Starting pitcher Trent Schoeberl (Minnesota) went three innings, working out of jams in the first and second and left with the lead.
Max Rippl (Kent State) got the win with three shutout innings out of the bullpen. Rippl struck out four batters in his first action of the year en route to the victory.
In the late innings, the Rox relied on the trio of Austin Schneider (Texas at Tyler), Storm Hierholzer (TCU) and Josh Gainer (Long Island-Brooklyn) who each saw an inning on the mound. They combined for three strikeouts, allowing just two hits and no runs to close out the game.
Next, the Rox head home for the first of a two-game series with the Willmar Stingers. First pitch at the Rock Pile is at 4:05 pm on Sunday.
