Brockton Rox News Release
Onix Mercado and Jobu Morita collected back-to-back RBI singles with one out in the ninth to cap a four-run rally and lift the Elmira Pioneers (5-4) to a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Brockton Rox (7-2) on Tuesday night at Dunn Field.
With the Quebec Capitales having lost earlier in the evening, the Rox were in prime position to move into sole possession of first place in the Can-Am League North Division. Starting the bottom of the ninth, Brockton looked ready to do so, three outs away from victory with a comfortable 3-0 lead and All-Star closer Joey Cole on the mound.
But Jason Tuttle led off with a single and advanced to third on Das Jesson's double. Hitting coach/leftfielder Trey Beamon followed with a routine grounder to shortstop Eugene Julien, who uncorked a wild throw that sailed into the dugout. Tuttle and Jesson both scored to cut the score to 3-2 while the potential tying run in the person of Beamon stood at second base. Jeremy Booth drew a walk before Cole rebounded with a strikeout of Jabe Bergeron for the inning's first out, bringing Mercado to the plate and Morita to the on-deck circle.
The rally negated an excellent effort by Rox starter Dennis Boyd, who was reached for just three hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings despite a rain delay that interrupted play before the start of the third frame.
Kris Zacuto gave Brockton the early lead with a run-scoring single in the fourth off Elmira starter Michael Howell. In the seventh, the Rox tacked on two more runs, thanks to RBI singles by Andrew Salvo and Matt Cucurullo.
On this night, it would not be enough.
Kyle George (1-1) pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to record the victory, with Cole (5-3) shouldering the loss.
Elmira and Brockton play the rubber game in the three-game series on Wednesday at 7:05, Jose Guzman (2-4, 3.80) for the Pioneers against Kevin Beavers (2-3, 3.61) and the Rox.
