Cutters finish strong in doubleheader split with Grays
July 26, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release
The New Haven County Cutters powered their way past the Can-Am Grays in the second game of Tuesday night?s doubleheader, blasting three home runs in a 10-3 victory. The win salvaged a split of the twin bill after the Grays won the opener 4-2.
Shortstop Chas Terni got things rolling for New Haven County in game two with a two-run home run in the Cutters? half of the first inning. It was the fourth home run of the season for the veteran infielder. Not to be outdone by their teammate, the power regulars for the Cutters, Derrick Gibson and Bill Peavey, each added their own-two run blast in the third and seventh innings, respectively.
The Cutters? offensive explosion in the night cap was in sharp contrast to game one. The Grays? starting pitcher, Lincoln Mincks, held the New Haven County offense at bay, scattering eight hits over six innings, allowing two earned runs. Brad Hargreaves, who caught both games of the double dip, drove in two runs to pace the Grays.
In game two, the Cutters? bats made sure that starting pitcher Jarrett Stawarz would get enough run support to pick up his fifth victory of the year. Entering the game, he had the league?s lowest earned run average at 2.12. That number will increase slightly, as he allowed three runs over six innings, but he was more than deserving of the victory he registered.
Gibson, recently named Can-Am Batter of the Week, added to his numbers by going two for three with three runs scored to go along with the two RBIs collected on his home run. Nick Hiter filled in admirably for Andy Larned behind the plate in game two, collecting two hits of his own with one run batted in.
The Cutters and the Grays finish their three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05. Brad Whitworth (2-1) heads to the hill for Cutters and will face off against the Grays? Tony Pierce (1-1).
