Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Worcester, MA -- Worcester pitchers walked a season-high eight Rox hitters and the Tornadoes left a season-high 13 runners stranded on base (including at least one in every inning) as Brockton frustrated Worcester, 7-2, in the first game of a three-game series.

The game began as a pitchers duel between Worcester righty Reid Willett (1-3) and Brockton lefty Rolando Viera (3-2). The Tornadoes struck first for the 18th straight game, using a two-out RBI single from Yohanny Valera to go up 1-0 in the 3rd inning. The score would stay that way until the top of the 6th inning, when Tony Gonzalez laced a two-out two run double to centerfield off Willet, putting Brockton ahead, 2-1.

The Tornadoes bullpen, which had been solid for most of the season, struggled to find the plate as Eddie Pena, Ryan Mitchell and Mike Meagher combined to allow five runs on four hits and six walks over the next three innings, turning a close game into a comfortable lead for Brockton. The Tornadoes received a two-out RBI single from Euvi Solano in the 8th, but it was too little too late.

Viera (3-2) picked up the win and Willett (1-3) pitched well but was tagged with the loss. Mike MacMillan had three outfield assists on the night to set a Can-Am League record and up his team-leading total to seven on the season. The Tornadoes will try to even the series at one game apiece tomorrow night when they send righty Alex Pena (1-1) to the mound opposite Brockton righty Luis Carreras (5-0). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
