New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals dropped Friday night's game against the Can-Am Grays, 3-2. This was the second straight loss for New Jersey, making it the first time that they had lost more than one game in a row all season.
The typically hot 2007 Jackal bats were virtually unused in the contest thanks to Grays' starter Everett Stull's dominant performance.
Stull, who had previously lost his last start to the Jackals while allowing six earned runs, went 8 2/3 strong innings, giving up just seven hits.
Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the first inning, however the Grays would manage to score a run in the second.
Catcher JB Tucker doubled to the left field gap to become the first runner to reach base in the game. With two outs, third baseman Ben Tinius lifted a lazy fly ball to center field. Most people both in the stadium and on the field anticipated a third out to end the inning with sure-handed Zack Smithlin camping under the ball. However, the strong winds plaguing Yogi Berra Stadium all day carried the ball in all different directions and eventually landing just in front of Smithlin's glove, giving the center fielder an error and allowing an unearned run to come across for the Grays.
In the third inning the Grays pushed two more across on an RBI double by left fielder Chad Gabriel and an RBI single by Tucker.
Through five innings, the first place New Jersey Jackals offense was only able to muster two measly hits with no runs to show for it.
However, designated hitter Sandy Madera would drove both himself and right fielder Francisco Leandro on a two-run home run in the sixth, putting some life into the Jackals offense.
The score remained 3-2 in the ninth inning when with two outs the Jacakls forged a rally. Pinch runner Tim Turner stole second and advanced to third on a wild throw. Catcher Clay Kucklick would then walk in the next at bat.
Short stop Guillermo Reyes then popped a ball straight up to the catcher, who dove but was only able to touch the ball with the tip of his mitt. Chaos would then ensue, but when the dust cleared it was ruled a foul ball. Reyes would pop out to third to end the game.
Stull earned the victory in impressive fashion. Josh Brey, who also pitched well, lost it for New Jersey. Jerry Dunn came in in the ninth to collect a one out save.
