Brockton Rox News Release

BROCKTON, MA - With a magic number of two in order to clinch a playoff berth, the Brockton Rox were unable to make the number move as the Rox fell to the Worcester Tornadoes 7-3 at Campanelli Stadium before a Thursday night crowd of 2,493. Worcester scored three runs in the first against RHP Wayne Lundgren, who allowed six runs in six innings, taking his third consecutive loss. C Jason Radwan finished 3-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI in a losing effort for the Rox. Despite the loss, the Rox won the season-series against the Tornadoes 8-5. The Rox have five games left in the regular season, all at home against New Jersey, starting tomorrow with a doubleheader at 5:05 PM. Brockton enters the series with a 46-41 overall record, 22-19 in the second half.

The Tornadoes took the lead in the first inning with an RBI double off the bat of 1B Chris Colabello and a two-run single from DH Jabe Bergeron. They added two more in the fourth against Lundgren with a two-run double by Elliot Shea. Trailing 5-0 in the fifth, the Rox broke through with an RBI single off the bat of SS Mike Scanzano. Both teams exchanged runs in the sixth, and the Rox trailed 6-2 heading into the eighth.

DH Guye Senjem and 1B Francisco Lebron opened the bottom of the eighth with singles against LHP Dallas Mahan, who left the game in favor of RHP Chris Shank. Shank gave up a single to Radwan, as the Rox cut the lead to three. However, LF Jeff LaRue struck out and 3B Mike Torres hit into a double play to end the inning. Trailing 7-3 in the ninth, the Rox loaded the bases, but Shank struck out two consecutive to end the game and preserve the Worcester win. The series win for the Tornadoes was their first in four attempts against the Rox.

Brockton will have a chance to clinch a playoff berth tomorrow with a win in the doubleheader against New Jersey at 5:05 PM. RHP Brad Guy (8-5, 3.08 ERA) starts for the Rox. Both games will be seven-inning contests.
