Brockton Rox News Release
(Quebec City, QC - July 28th, 2011) - The Brockton Rox had the chance for their first ever four-game sweep of the Quebec Capitales at Le Stade Municipal; but Sebastien Boucher wouldn't let that happen.
Quebec (6-5, 41-16) salvaged the series with Brockton (8-3, 34-23) on Thursday behind Boucher's offensive explosion, as the Capitales' outfielder finished with seven RBIs in his teams' 9-5 win.
After dropping the first three games of the series, a hungry Quebec squad pounced on Rox starter Julian Sampson (3.2 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 5 BB, 2 K) from the beginning. After back-to-back walks opened up the bottom of the first, Boucher launched his fourth homer of the season off of Sampson (5-3) to put the Rox in an early hole.
The Rox knocked home their first run of the game in the second inning to trim the deficit to two, but would fall behind even further in the bottom half of the frame when Boucher and Rene Leveret drove in a pair of runs to make it a 5-1 ballgame.
Brockton bounced back with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, courtesy of an RBI double from Chris Valencia and Keith Brachold's team-leading 50th RBI of the season. However, Quebec responded with a run in the fourth on Leveret's second RBI of the night to make it a 6-3 game.
The Rox plated a run in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI single from Mike Torres, but the Capitales seemed to always have an answer. With reliever Robert Bono on the hill, Boucher ripped a two-run single to increase the lead to four.
Brockton got on the board once more in the sixth, but that would be all the offense the Rox could muster in this one. Meanwhile, the Capitales tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning and never looked back, despite the fact that the Rox offense rattled off 12 hits in the game.
Goefrey Tomlinson scored five of Quebec's nine runs in the win, while Leveret finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Josh Colafemina had a big night as well, contributing with a pair of hits and a pair of runs scored.
Quebec's John Mariotti (6.2 IP, 11 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 0 K) improved his record to a perfect 7-0 on the season after holding the Brockton offense in check throughout much of the game. The bullpen did their part too, as Dexter Bobo , Guillaume Duguay, and T.J. Stanton combined to allow just one hit in the final two innings.
Torres led the Rox offense with another outstanding night at the dish, as the veteran went 4-for-4 with an RBI. Melvin Falu finished 2-for-4 with a run scored in the losing effort.
The fleet-footed Valencia scored a pair of runs for the Rox, and also stole his league-leading 27th base of the year.
Despite the loss, the Rox maintain sole possession of first place in the Can-Am League second half standings, and are just seven games behind Quebec in the overall standings.
Brockton hits the road to Newark for the weekend, as the Rox and Bears will open up a three-game series at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Quebec, on the other hand, will travel to Rockland County to battle the Boulders.
Jake Loye will make his first start in a Brockton uniform on Friday night at 6:35 p.m., as the Rox look for redemption after dropping their most recent series against Newark last weekend at Campanelli Stadium.
