July 28, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
Rockland 8, Pittsfield 7 (game one of a doubleheader)
Rockland scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning en route to an 8-7 win against Pittsfield in game one of a doubleheader at Wahconah Park. Left fielder Billy Mottram and first baseman Angel Molina combined for three RBI in the bottom of the first inning to give the Colonials a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Colonials extended their lead when third baseman Peter Fatse and catcher Scott Knazek each scored a run, and in the fifth Pittsfield scored its last and final run when Molina hit a solo homer. In the top of the sixth inning, left fielder Norm Hutchins led off with a home run, and the Boulders registered five more runs on five hits to take the lead back once and for all. Two different Colonials had more than one hit in the game, and second baseman Danny Bomback led with three hits, two runs and one RBI in four at-bats. Right fielder Jeremy Slayden led Rockland with three hits and two RBI in four at-bats. John Muller, now 2-4 on the season, earned the win by allowing one hit, one run and striking out one in 1.1 innings pitched.
Pittsfield 12, Rockland 5 (game two of a doubleheader)
Designated hitter Scott Knazek had three hits, three runs and six RBI to help lead Pittsfield to a 12-5 win against Rockland in game two of a doubleheader at Wahconah Park. Knazek had a two-RBI triple in the second inning, and Jerod Edmondson followed moments later with a three-run homer to put Pittsfield ahead 8-2. Knazek struck again in the top of the next inning when he led off with a two-run homer. Knazek batted in the last two runs for Pittsfield in the top of the fifth inning with yet another home run. Rockland scored in the top of the sixth inning when left fielder Norm Hutchins batted in first baseman Cristobal Santana, but it wasn't enough to top the Colonials. Santana and catcher Scott Clement were the only Boulders to record multiple hits in the game. MacKenzie King, now 2-3 on the season, earned the win by allowing six hits, five runs and striking out four in seven innings pitched.
Newark 9, New York 6
Newark scored five runs in the final two innings to take the lead back from New York, and the Bears topped the Federals 9-6 in the final game of a four-game series at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. After both teams went scoreless in the first two frames, the Bears got on the board first in the bottom of the third when left fielder Brandon Watson had a solo home run, and right fielder Danny Santiesteban and shortstop Chase Fontaine each batted in a run. Newark scored again in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead against New York, but the Federals took it right back by scoring five runs in the fifth and one more in the top of the sixth. With the Bears trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Fontaine had an RBI-double, and designated hitter Burt Reynolds followed with a two-run homer. Newark added two more runs for good measure in the bottom of the eighth. Five different Bears had multiple hits in the game, and second baseman Juan Martinez led with two hits, two runs and one RBI in four at-bats. Shortstop Tucker Nathans chipped in two hits, one run and one RBI for the Federals. Eric Eden, now 4-2 on the season, earned the win by allowing one hit, no runs and striking out three in two innings pitched.
Quebec 9, Brockton 5
Right fielder Sebastien Boucher batted in seven runs and recorded three hits and one run in five at-bats to help lead Quebec to a 9-5 win against Brockton at Le Stade Municipal Stadium. Quebec jumped to an early 5-1 lead after two innings, but Brockton scored two in the top of the third when center fielder Chris Valencia and right fielder Keith Brachold each batter in a run. The Capitales scored four of the next six runs to earn the victory. Quebec recorded 13 total hits in the game, while Brockton had 12. Five Capitales had multiple hits, and in addition to Boucher's standout performance, second baseman Josh Colafemina chipped in two hits and two runs in three at-bats. Third baseman Mike Torres went 4-for-4 for Brockton and batted in one of the Rox's runs, while Valencia added two hits, two runs and one RBI in five at-bats. John Mariotti, now a perfect 7-0 on the season, earned the win by allowing 11 hits, five runs and striking out no batters in 6.2 innings pitched.
