Brockton Rox News Release
(Brockton, Mass. - September 1, 2011) - The Brockton Rox (22-22, 48-42) left 14 men on base and nine in scoring position en route to an 8-4 loss to the Pittsfield Colonials (25-18, 50-39) in a crucial rubber match at Campanelli Stadium on Thursday night.
The Rox and Colonials battled back forth early on in a sloppy game that saw five combined errors and yielded a 3-2 Brockton lead after four frames.
Pittsfield drew first blood in the first inning after a Dustin Birosak (7-2) throwing error put the Rox in an 0-2 hole, despite the lefthander striking out the side. Birosak went six frames in the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits, while striking out seven.
Brockton scored three times over the next three frames with Dominic Ramos, Dan Barbero and Keith Brachold each picking up RBIs.
Ramos went 2-for-5 and knocked in two, while plating leadoff man Chris Valencia (3-for-4) twice.
Billy Mottram drove home Jerod Edmondson to tie the game at three in the fifth and then the Colonials made it 6-3 in the top of the sixth, beginning with Johnny Welch's leadoff home run, followed by four straight two-out hits. Danny Bomback capped the rally with an RBI on his second double and finished the evening 4-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored.
Edmondson plated a game high three and scored twice after homering with Matt Nandin aboard in the eighth to give Pittsfield the 8-4 lead.
David Qualben (7-7) pitched in and out of trouble through seven and 2/3 innings to get the win. The southpaw worked with men on in every frame, giving up four runs (two earned) on ten hits. The victory for Qualben drops the Rox record against lefthanded starters to 9-16 this season.
Mike Zenko (7) recorded four outs for his seventh save of the season, while striking out the final two batters of the game.
With just three games left to go in the season, the Rox trail Pittsfield by two and 1/2 games and Worcester by one game in the chase for the final two playoff spots in the Can-Am League.
The regular season wraps up with a three game series against New Jersey over the weekend. The Jackals ride a ten game win streak into the opener at 7:05 p.m. on Friday with fireworks presented by Atlas to follow the action on the field. Julian Sampson (9-5, 3.78) toes the rubber against Michael Moore (5-0, 3.58) as the Rox look to keep their playoff hopes alive.
