September 2, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
The Capitales came back with five unanswered runs in both halves of the doubleheader to defeat Worcester 5-4 and 5-1 Friday night at Le Stade Municipal in Quebec City. Bobby Wagner had the game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth in game one and Sebastien Boucher added a two-run shot to score the final runs in game two.
In the first game, the Tornadoes scored three times in the first inning. Alex Nunez singled, Abraham Nunez walked and Chris Colabello doubled Alex Nunez home. Mark Minicozzi's sacrifice fly scored Abraham Nunez, and Alex Trezza's double sent Colabello across the dish, giving Worcester a 3-0 advantage.
Worcester added a run in the top of the fourth, when Tony Patane led a frame off for the second time and reached. He walked, stole second and scored on an infield single by Abraham Nunez.
The Capitales scored thrice in the bottom of the fifth, with Boucher recording an RBI on a fielder's choice and Rene Leveret knocking two home (Helps and Boucher) with a double. One inning later, Wagner hit his team-leading 13th dinger with Ivan Naccarata on in front of him, ending game one's scoring.
The Tornadoes stranded the tying run on third against Quebec closer T.J. Stanton, who notched the save after allowing a lead-off walk to Alex Nunez.
Dan Sausville pitched six innings for the victory, his third over Worcester in four starts in 2011. He struck out five, walked four and allowed four runs on six hits.
Zach Zuercher picked up the loss (14-5) by going 5.1 innings and giving up all five Quebec runs on ten hits. He walked one batter and struck out three. Nick Serino faced one batter, retiring Goeffrey Tomlinson, then picking Jeff Helps off to end the sixth.
In the second contest, the Tornadoes again struck first. Cameron Monger singled after he was initially ruled as being hit by a previous pitch in the third. Worcester Manager Ed Riley was ejected for arguing after the call was reversed. Monger reached base, stole second and scored on Alex Nunez's RBI infield single. Nunez was tagged out after reaching, and the Tornadoes could muster no more.
In the bottom half of the frame, Quebec scored three times to take a 3-1 lead. Pierre-Luc Laforest had a two-RBI single before Naccarata added another RBI-hit.
Kevin Cooper fell to (5-5) on the season with the loss, going five innings. He allowed five runs on five hits while striking out three batters and walking four. Mike Mullen added a shutout inning with a couple of hits given up and a couple of swinging strikeouts to end the threat.
The win went to Karl Gelinas in a complete-game effort, allowing one run on five hits and two walks. He struck out four Tornadoes hitters and induced a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
In combination with the Pittsfield Colonials' doubleheader sweep and the Brockton Rox's win, the Tornadoes now need at least two wins and two Rox losses to make the playoffs with the fourth spot. Worcester can no longer win the second half, because New Jersey owns the tiebreaker.
Game three of the series is Saturday at 7:05pm, as Ryan Bicondoa takes the hill for the Tornadoes. Audio coverage starts with Tornadoes Pre-Game Live at 6:50 on USTREAM.
