Brockton Rox News Release
LYNN --- The Brockton Rox (14-11) scored at least two runs in four of the first five innings on their way to a 14-5 blowout of host North Shore (10-11.
The Rox broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the first in a hurry. Each of the first three batters reached to load the bases with none out. A fielder's choice off of Craig Lewis' bat, a single by Brian Jones, and Kris Zacuto's suicide squeeze bunt made the score 3-0.
A Guye Senjem two-run homer gave Brockton a five-run lead in the top half of the third, and then the Rox put it away in the fourth.
Mike Scanzano singled, Eugene Julien walked, Saul Bustos singled home Scanzano, and Jake Daubert worked North Shore starter Wayne Hedden for a walk to load the bases. Mark Comolli relieved Hedden and recorded two quick outs when Lewis flied to right and Julien was thrown out at the plate attempting to score. But Brian Jones followed with a run-scoring base hit, two successive bases on balls forced home the third run of the inning, and rookie Brad Rosenblat collected his first professional RBI and base hit on an infield bouncer to widen the Brockton lead to 9-0.
With starters from each squad getting rest on the bench, both teams scored five runs from the fifth inning on. The Rox tallied twice against Comolli in the fifth, then put two up in the eighth and one in the ninth against North Shore designated hitter-turned-hurler Travis Oglesby.
Meanwhile, a trio of home runs provided the Spirit with their only offense. Garrett Weir launched a solo shot in the seventh to stop any thought of a shutout. Rookie Stephen Carter cracked a two-run roundtripper in the eighth and Oglesby added a two-run blast of his own in the ninth.
Rox starter Manny Tejada (3-3) collected the victory, lasting 7.1 innings and allowing nine hits and three runs. Hedden (0-2) shouldered the loss, giving up eight runs in just three innings-plus of work.
The two teams return to action for the second game of their three game series on Wednesday night at 7:05. Kevin Beavers (1-0, 1.26) takes to the mound for Brockton to face North Shore's Bryan Morse (3-0, 3.91).
