Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA (June 26, 2008) - Thursday night's series finale was a highly anticipated pitchers' duel between two of the best pitchers the Can-Am League has to offer, and the play on the field lived up to the hype. Quebec LHP Eric Cyr shut down the Rox with eight shutout innings, and struck out 11 as he out-dueled Rox ace RHP John Kelly who struck out six, while allowing three runs in seven innings. Quebec earned a split in the four-game series with the 3-0 victory.
Kelly and Cyr battled nearly pitch for pitch through the first five innings. The game was scoreless through five innings; Brockton had collected three hits and Quebec had four hits. Kelly had six strikeouts and Cyr had eight. Neither pitcher had issued a walk, and each had retired the side in order in the first and fifth innings. Both pitchers faced exactly 18 batters through the first five innings.
However in the sixth inning, Quebec scored the only runs of the game. LF Issael Gonzalez and RF Alex Nunez led off the inning with singles, and put runners at first and third base with no outs. 3B Patrick Deschenes then hit a ground ball to Rox SS Dominic Ramos who flipped to 2B Melvin Falu to force out Nunez at second. Falu turned and threw home to try and get the lead runner Gonzalez who slid in just ahead of the throw for the first run of the game. Two batters later, DH Patrick Scalabrini hit a line drive that just barely cleared the right field wall for a two-run home run, giving the Capitales a 3-0 advantage.
The could not muster any offense, picking up a sparse six hits throughout the contest. Capitales' RHP Jason Schutt faced three batters in the ninth inning and recorded his fifth save of the year.
Brockton has an off-day Friday before embarking on a six-game Canadian road trip. The Rox will first stop in Ottawa on Saturday for the first of a three-game series, and then move on to Quebec to play the Capitales in a three-game set. Brockton returns to Campanelli Stadium on July 4th to celebrate Independence Day with a special Friday Night Fireworks display as they host the Worcester Tornadoes.
