New Jersey Jackals News Release

Worcester, MA - Records fell on Thursday evening as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Worcester Tornadoes 5-4 in 20 innings at Hanover Insurance Park. The game was the longest in Cam-Am League history. With the score tied at 3-3 in the top of the 19th inning, Jackals LF Andrew Larsen hit his first home run of the season with the bases empty to give the Jackals a 4-3 lead. However, Worcester countered in the bottom of the frame when CF BJ Weed, who had doubled, scored on a Chris Colabello sacrifice fly to send the game into the 20th inning. In the 20th, New Jersey 2B Marcus Sanders connected for his first home run of the year to once again propel the Jackals to a one-run lead at 5-4. In the bottom of the inning, Tom Atlee retired the side in order to notch his first save of the season. Sanders was the star at the plate for New Jersey, going 5-10 with 3 RBIs despite not picking up his first hit until his fourth at bat in the seventh inning. Hunter Davis (1-0) picked up the win for the Jackals, entering in the 17th inning and tossing three innings of one-run ball. Worcester's Alex Pena was tagged with the loss after surrendering the home runs to Larsen and Sanders.

In the win, the Jackals also set a franchise record as New Jersey pitchers struck out 21 Worcester batters. The previous record of 18 was set on August 4th, 1998 in Lynn, MA against the Massachusetts Mad Dogs. The 21 strikeouts are also a new Can-Am League record, shattering the previous mark of 15 (the modern Can-Am League dates back to 2005). New Jersey remains 2 ½ games behind first-place Quebec with 13 games remaining in the first half of the season. In the win, Jackals relievers Ted Serro and Brandon Martin combined to hurl seven shutout innings. Worcester reliever Justin Edwards went seven innings out of the Tornadoes bullpen, but didn't factor in the decision.

Isaac Pavlik started for New Jersey and pitched well, surrendering one run on eight hits in six innings. Rookie Chandler Barnard made his first professional start for Worcester, allowing one run in 5 1/3 innings.

The game was scoreless until the Jackals plated a run in the sixth inning on an RBI groundout by RF Craig Maddox. Worcester countered with a run in the bottom of the seventh and one more in the bottom of the eighth before the Jackals sent the game to extra innings on a ninth inning RBI base knock by Sanders. The Jackals return home on Friday evening to begin a three-game series against the Nashua Pride at 7:05 p.m. when right-hander Aaron Tressler makes his eighth start of the season. If you can't make it out to Yogi Berra Stadium, you can catch every pitch via live webcast at www.jackals.com with coverage beginning five minutes prior to the start of the game.
