Brockton Rox News Release

(Brockton, Mass. - June 29, 2011) - The Brockton Rox (17-14) posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time this season, besting the New York Federals (5-27) 5-0 Wednesday night, after mashing a franchise best 19 runs just 24 hours earlier.

Freddy Flores (3-1) set the tone early, retiring the first four batters he faced on the way to seven smooth innings of shutout baseball. The 37 year old righty lasted a season high tying seven frames, scattering five hits, while walking one and striking out five to earn the victory.

The crafty veteran worked out of situations with men on base in 5-of-7 innings as New York wound up stranding nine.

New York starter Jake Loye (0-2) pitched well in the loss, holding the Rox hitless until Chris Valencia knocked home Dominic Ramos with a two-out RBI single in the fifth inning. Loye threw six and 1/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits, while striking out and walking five.

The one run would have been enough, but the Rox offense gave the back end of the bullpen some insurance, plating four more in the eighth inning. After an error and two singles, the Rox had loaded the bases with no outs and went on to score on a wild pitch, a Trey Hernandez sacrifice fly and back-to-back RBI singles from Shawn Williams and Ramos.

Williams reached base all four times he stepped to the plate for Brockton, going 2-for-2 with an RBI and two walks.

Jake Hale tossed a perfect eighth frame, striking out two, before making way for Travis Hughes in the ninth. Hughes loaded the bases with one out, but escaped unscathed after striking out Kyle Obal and Jose Reyes to end the game.

The Rox have now outscored the Federals 24-0 in the first two games of the four game set. Julian Sampson (2-2, 3.96) gets the call for Brockton in game three. He will oppose fellow righthander Will Hassett (1-3, 4.20) as the Rox look to pull even at 3-3 for the homestand. First pitch for a Heineken Thirsty Thursday is set for 7:05 p.m.
