
Colonials Take Down Bears Late

NEWARK, NJ - The Pittsfield Colonials used a pair of multiple run innings, the last one a four-run ninth to down the Newark Bears 9-5.
Tied at 5-5 heading into the ninth, the Colonials got things off to a good start as Angel Molina led off reaching on an error. A throwing error by pitcher Chris Rollins moved Molina to second and a single by Billy Mottram moved him to third base. Johnny Welch followed with a fielder's choice to score Molina and make it 6-5. After a walk to Peter Fatse put runners on first and second, Scott Knazek singled, scoring Welch and making it 7-5. A double steal by Fatse and Knazek moved up the runners to second and third. The pair would come in to score on back-to-back singled by Quentin Davis and Jerod Edmondson to make it 9-5 Colonials.
Newark scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning on the third homer of the season off the bat of Eric McGee for a 1-0 Bears lead.
Pittsfield would come back in a big way in the fifth inning. With a run already in and two outs, four consecutive Colonials batters combined to hit for the cycle. Things got started with a Scott Knazek single followed by a ground-rule double off the bat of Quentin Davis to move Knazek to third. Jerod Edmondson came up and roped a double into the right-centerfield gap to score the runners and make it 3-1 Pittsfield. Matt Nandin capped the inning with his first homer of the season.
The Bears would come back in the bottom of the inning with two runs on an RBI single from Brandon Young and a groundout by Brandon Watson. Two more runs came in during the sixth on a double by Danny Sanitesteban and a groundout by Ryan Walsh to knot the game at 5-5.
The win went to Mike Zenko (3-0) who tossed 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Chris Rollins (1-1) took the loss for Newark.
The series continues on Thursday with Eric Katzman (0-0, 7.20) on the mound for Pittsfield. The starter for Newark has not been annoucned.
