Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express (69-73) finally got a doubleheader victory over the Nashville Sounds (76-66) Saturday night at Dell Diamond, falling 5-2 in game one before claiming a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.
The Express had lost five straight doubleheader contests to the Sounds entering game two Saturday. On the season, Round Rock has now played in a Triple-A franchise record nine doubleheaders (7-11).
In game one, the Sounds took to the scoreboard first on a leadoff home run by 1B Matt Clark in the second. The solo blast to right was Clark's 15th since joining Nashville in early July.
The Express leapfrogged the Sounds in the third to take a 2-1 lead. DH J.R. Towles worked a walk to begin the inning and advanced to second when RF Cory Patton bounced a single through the right side. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch and, with two outs, scored on a line drive up the middle by SS Luis Sardinas. Patton, who jumped on the E-Train Friday, finished 1-for-2 in his Triple-A debut.
Nashville responded with runs in the fourth and fifth innings to regain the lead at 3-2. CF Logan Schafer squared the game with a two-out RBI single in the fourth before SS Hector Gomez gave the Sounds a one-run lead with a one-run flare base hit into center in the fifth. Round Rock CF Jared Hoying did, however, limit Nashville's scoring in the fifth, cutting down Clark at the plate as he attempted to score from second on a Hunter Morris base hit.
The Sounds took advantage of control problems by E-Train reliever Nate Adcock in the sixth to add two more runs to their lead. Adcock, who began the inning in place of starter LHP Edwar Cabrera, hit a batter and walked two to load the bases with no outs. With the pond full of ducks, 3B Jason Rogers and LF Sean Halton brought the final score to 5-2 with a run-scoring single and a sacrifice fly to center.
Cabrera (2-3, 4.50 ERA) was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs on nine hits. The left-hander struck out four and walked four.
RHP Billy Buckner (5-6, 5.83 ERA) permitted two runs on three hits in six innings to pick up the win for Nashville. Sounds closer RHP Rob Wooten worked a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his 14th save of the season.
In game two, both teams were held scoreless for three innings before Round Rock broke the seal with a run in the fourth. With one out, Hoying served a single into center field for the E-Train's first hit of the game. DH Brett Nicholas followed with a double into the right field corner, scoring Hoying all the way from first to give the Express a 1-0 advantage.
Nashville came right back with a score in the fifth to knot the game at one. LF Eugenio Velez singled with one out, stole second and came around to touch home when 3B Josh Wilson was unable to put a glove on a sharply hit groundball, allowing it to bound into left field.
Round Rock reclaimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The tandem of Hoying and Nicholas got the inning started with back-to-back singles. After a strikeout, 1B Drew Robinson delivered both runners with a bloop two-run double down the left field line to give the Express a 3-1 lead they would not relinquish.
Express starter RHP Zack Segovia pitched well in his second start with Round Rock, but had to settle for the no decision. The right-hander from Forney, Texas allowed one unearned run on four hits over five innings, while striking out five and walking four.
Segovia's replacement RHP Matt West (3-3, 4.04 ERA) earned the win after tossing a scoreless sixth inning, striking out two.
E-Train closer RHP Spencer Patton struck out the side after giving up a leadoff hit in the seventh to record his 18th save of the campaign.
The Express and Sounds will continue their series-ending series Sunday with game five of their six-game set. RHP Lisalverto Bonilla (3-2, 4.39 ERA) is slated to take the ball for Round Rock against UT-Austin alum Taylor Jungmann (8-6, 4.10 ERA) of Nashville. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:05 p.m. on Fan Appreciation Night at the ballpark, presented by Dell, who will be giving away tablets every inning. Additionally, there will be a Mystery Photo Giveaway presented by Precision Camera & Video, with the first 3,000 fans receiving autographed photos of past or present Round Rock Express or Texas Rangers players.
The will be many other promotions taking place Sunday at the park, so for more information, visit www.RoundRockExpress.com or call (512) 255-2255. Keep up with the Express on Facebook and Twitter.
