Memphis Redbirds News Release
METAIRIE, Louisiana - Saturday night's contest between the Memphis Redbirds and New Orleans Zephyrs was suspended due to rain at Zephyr Field.
The rain delay began at 7:31 CST and lasted roughly 45 minutes before the game was called. The suspended contest will resume Sunday at 4:30. Following its completion, the two teams will play a seven inning game.
Sunday's first contest will resume in the bottom of the fifth with no outs, a runner on first and the score knotted at 2-2.
Memphis was in the driver's seat to start Saturday night. Tommy Pham was hit by the opening pitch of the game and proceeded to steal second base during the next at-bat. Ed Easley followed by knocking the speedy outfielder in with a double to right. It boosted Easley's RBI total during August to 18.
New Orleans jumped on top of the 'Birds in the third inning though. Alex Sanabia led off with a single and Mark Canha smoked his 20th homer of the season two batters later.
The pair of runs was charged to starting pitcher Zach Petrick, who threw 83 pitches through 4.0 innings of work. The right-hander was coming off a seven strikeout performance, which was a Triple-A high, and had already fanned six.
The Redbirds tied the ballgame up in the fifth, a half-inning before the rain came. Rafael Ortega knocked a leadoff double to center and Petrick recorded his first Triple-A hit to put runners at the corners. With one away, Pham hit a chopper to short for a potential double play, but beat it out to allow Ortega to score.
Pham proceeded to swipe his second base of the night during the next at-bat, giving him a team-leading 20 on the season and moving him into a four-way tie for seventh place on the Redbirds franchise single-season list. It was his third multi-steal game of the 2014.
Memphis will send another righty to the bump tomorrow, as Boone Whiting (4-6, 4.05) will make the start in the second game tomorrow. New Orleans will counter will Elih Villanueva.
