Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Round Rock pitchers saw their shutout bid spoiled with two outs in the ninth but settled for a 5-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds in Tuesday night's series finale at The Dell Diamond. The Express (28-31) claimed the series victory with the win, three games to one. Round Rock holds a 6-2 lead in the season series with the Sounds.
Brian Esposito snapped a scoreless tie with a one-out, two-run double in the bottom of the fourth. Chris Johnson's two-out solo homer in the fifth pushed Round Rock's lead to 3-0. The Express tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth; Matt Kata plated the first run with an RBI triple and later scored when Drew Locke grounded into a double play.
Three Express pitchers held the Sounds scoreless through eight innings, but Nashville managed to scratch the scoreboard with two outs in the ninth. Mat Gamel walked with one out, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Brendan Katin followed with an RBI double, but Luis Cruz lined out to end the game.
Starter Shane Loux (2-1) picked up the win, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings. He allowed back-to-back singles and hit a batter to start the game but did not allow another base runner, retiring each of the last 14 batters he faced. Loux struck out two with no walks.
Erick Abreu tossed 2.0 scoreless no-hit innings with a walk and a strikeout. Gary Majewski worked around a two-out single for a scoreless eighth; the single was Nashville's first hit since the game's first two batters. Roy Corcoran worked the ninth, allowing a run on one hit and a walk.
Nashville starter Chris Waters (4-3) took the loss but was not around to see the end of the game. He was ejected by home-plate umpire Angel Campos at the end of the fourth inning and made his way to the clubhouse before the start of the fifth. Waters allowed two runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 4.0 innings. David Johnson had four strikeouts over 2.0 innings and allowed only one run - Johnson's home run - on two hits.
Jason Bourgeois was 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to 17 games, tied for the third-longest streak in the Pacific Coast League this season. It is the league's longest active streak as Memphis shortstop Tyler Greene saw his 17-game streak snapped Tuesday night with an 0-for-5 outing. Bourgeois has hit safely in 27 of the last 28 games and collected his 14th multiple-hit game during that span Tuesday night.
Esposito, Johnson and Kata each had two hits; the latter two each scored twice. Jason Castro, who has reached safely in 28 consecutive games, did not play.
Wednesday is an off-day throughout the PCL. Round Rock begins its fifth road trip of the season Thursday, opening a four-game series against the New Orleans Zephyrs. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. CDT at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La. Round Rock dropped three of four at New Orleans in the season's first series. Right-hander Josh Banks (6-4, 3.33 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express, while the Zephyrs counter with left-hander Hunter Jones (0-5, 4.17 ERA).
