Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa â West Michigan's Jody Roughton drove in five runs to power the Whitecaps past the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 9-7, Sunday afternoon at wind-swept New Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Whitecaps (19-18) scored three runs in each of the first, second and fourth innings and never trailed in winning their second straight game against the Kernels (19-17).
The loss was the Kernels' seventh in 10 games.
West Michigan banged out 14 hits and was aided by 10 bases on balls. Roughton, who entered the game with four RBI in 18 previous games with West Michigan, matched that total by the second inning. He had a sacrifice fly in the first inning and a bases-clearing double in the second inning. His triple over the head of Kernels center fielder Quan Cosby drove in a run in the fourth inning. He also had a single.
The Kernels had nine hits, but received only two free passes from West Michigan hurlers. Erick Aybar had two hits, including a two-run single in the Kernels' first when they tied the game, 3-3.
Jared Abruzzo and Matt Brown also had two hits apiece.
Trailing 6-3, the Kernels scored twice in the bottom of the third inning. A sacrifice fly by former Marion prep Alex Dvorsky drove home the first run and the second scored when West Michigan right fielder Brent Clevlen missed Caleb Maher's fly ball for a two-base error.
The Kernels' chipped away at West Michigan's 9-5 lead, scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Cosby's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning plated the first run and Abruzzo's grounder to short drove home the run in the seventh.
Jeff Marquez (2-3), making only his second start for the Kernels, took the loss, lasting one-plus innings.
