West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
West Michigan Whitecaps first baseman Jody Roughton (ROE-ten) drove in five runs on Sunday afternoon to lead the Whitecaps to a 9-7 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in Iowa. Roughton had a single, double, triple and sacrifice fly as the Whitecaps beat the Kernels for the second straight time. The Whitecaps have now won four of their last five games.
After each team scored three times in the first, Roughton's bases-loaded double in the second made it a 6-3 Whitecaps lead. His RBI triple in the fourth paced another 3-run West Michigan rally that built the lead to 9-5 and the 'Caps held off the Kernels the rest of the way. Roughton's five RBIs were one shy of the franchise record for a single game.
Four other Whitecaps hitters had two hits as the club banged-out 14 hits including five extra-base hits 'Caps starter Troy Pickford survived three wind-aided errors in the outfield to win his second game of the season.
The two teams will now conclude the series on Monday night at 7:30 Michigan time. Humberto Sanchez (3-3) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Whitecaps.
