Madison Capitols News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA- The Madison Capitols (21-19-10) did not have the answers for a hot RoughRider power play as Cedar Rapids (35-16-0) skated off with a 4-1 win at The Stable on Saturday evening.
After the two clubs had been pretty disciplined in the prior four matchups, resulting in just 18 power plays combined, each team received a pair of opportunities in the first period and made no mistakes.
First, it was the RoughRiders drawing an early power play, and Erik Foley was able to jam a rebound past Darren Smith at 3:31 to give Cedar Rapids the 1-0 lead. It was the RoughRiders' seventh power play goal against the Capitols in just five games.
Despite giving up seven of the first nine shots and the first goal, Madison would not let the early adversity faze the group. Cal Burke got too aggressive and ran over Smith at the 12:00 mark, setting up the Capitols on a power play. After going 0-for-6 on their previous power plays against Cedar Rapids this season, Madison was able to connect on try number seven.
At 13:11, Tommy Muck picked up his second goal in as many weekends on a one-time slap shot from the center point, set up by Ryan Lohin and Sam McCormick. The Eagan, Minn. native pulled Madison back to a 1-1 tie heading into the first intermission, despite the Capitols being outshot 12-6 in the opening 20 minutes.
Cedar Rapids, a team that entered the game fresh after not having a game in seven nights, continued their strong first period into an even stronger second period push. The red-hot RoughRider power play did not slow down, as Andrew Oglevie wristed a shot from the high slot through Smith at 4:35 to tick Cedar Rapids back in front, 2-1. With a 2-for-3 performance with the power play, the RoughRiders improved to 8-for-15 against the Capitols with the man-advantage this season.
Madison had another power play opportunity when Charlie Gerard drew a tripping minor, but the Capitols could not get much pressure on Blacker's crease, with a two-period total of just ten shots.
The RoughRiders added to their lead then in the late stages of the period, as Cal Burke raced down the right wing side on a 2-on-1 and beat Smith over the blocker to make it 3-1 at 18:45.
Madison opened the final frame with a fourth power play chance, but it was quickly foiled by the RoughRiders, The Capitols were finally able to get a higher quantity of shots toward the Cedar Rapids goal, but Blacker had the answers in finishing the night with 21 stops. Adam Gaudette provided the icing on the cake with his 10th goal into the empty net in the game's final minute.
In the loss, Smith made 29 stops in his 10th start out of the Capitols' last 13 games.
The Capitols then finish up the span of six games in ten nights against the Chicago Steel on Sunday at Edge Ice Arena for a 3:30 p.m. start. Coverage can be heard on 106.7 FM, 1670 AM The Zone, or online at www.madcitysportszone.com .
