Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA - The luck of the Irish was just what the Dubuque Fighting Saints needed to snap a three-game losing streak Saturday. Brian Bowen and Trey Dodd scored in the third period to lead the Fighting Saints to a 4-3 victory over the Green Bay Gamblers in front of 2,729 fans at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Jacob Nehama stopped 19 shots in goal for Dubuque to earn the win.
The Fighting Saints scored first for the second straight night as Evan Smith struck only 51 seconds into the game. Hayden Shaw worked the puck to Mitchell Smith low along the boards. He fed his twin brother with a pass in the slot, and Evan guided a shot over goaltender Kevin Reich's glove to make it 1-0 Dubuque.
Brett Boeing would add to the Fighting Saints lead on the power play at the 6:11 mark. Shaw moved the puck cross-ice to Boeing who was stationed at the left point. The forward walked in and blasted a slap shot past Reich to make it 2-0 Dubuque. The goal chased Reich, who allowed two goals on only five shots.
Green Bay would quickly cut into Dubuque's lead as Marc Michaelis beat Nehama off a face-off at 7:20. Sam Saliba won the draw back to Michaelis who snapped a shot past Nehama's glove to make it 2-1 Dubuque.
Saliba would add a goal of his own on the power play with just 11 seconds left in the first period. Michaelis worked the puck low to Saliba, and the forward cut to the slot and fired a backhand shot that snuck through the legs of Nehama to even the score 2-2. Jack Poehling also assisted on the goal, collecting his first USHL point in his debut.
The Fighting Saints have been a third period team all season long, and Saturday was no exception. Bowen broke the deadlock on a beautiful passing play with Dubuque on the man advantage midway through the period. Jacob Benson sent a pass to Nathan Sucese on the right wing. He fired a quick touch pass to Bowen in the low slot. The former Gambler made no mistake, firing a shot past an outstretched Jason Pawloski to give Dubuque the 3-2 lead. The goal was Bowen's 15th of the season.
Dubuque would add what turned out to be the winning goal at 16:46 of the third period. Willie Knierim fed Dodd behind the Green Bay goal. The Dubuque forward wrapped the puck out front and waited for Pawloski to commit before snapping a shot top corner to make it 4-2 Dubuque. The goal would turn out to be great insurance as Green Bay's Derek Barach would score with three seconds left on the power play to cut the lead to just one.
Dubuque outshot Green Bay 36-22 in the victory. Both teams scored a pair of power play goals.
Dubuque and Green Bay finish up the home-and-home series tomorrow in Green Bay. Puck drop from the Resch Center is 3:05 p.m. The game can be heard on Super Hits 106.1 FM. Dubuque is back home next Friday for the Glow in the Dark Game presented by Alliant Energy.
